Growing Awareness, Growing Impact — SHARLU’s Aluminium Can Collection Drive

Can collection 1

Sustainability doesn’t happen overnight. It grows through small actions, repeated consistently, until they become part of everyday behaviour. By November 2023, this shift was already visible at SHARLU. What began February of that year, as a simple awareness initiative had evolved into a stronger, more confident movement, one driven by employees, families, and a shared sense of responsibility.

Our second Aluminium Can Collection Drive marked a turning point. Participation increased, conversations deepened, and the idea of “waste as a resource” began to take root across the SHARLU community.

Building on the Momentum of February 2023

The first collection in February 2023 gathered 24.5 kg of aluminium cans – a modest but meaningful start. It showed that people were willing to participate once they understood the “why.”

By November, that understanding had grown. Awareness sessions, engagement, and simple reminders helped reinforce the message that aluminium is not just recyclable, it is endlessly recyclable, saving 95% of the energy required to produce new aluminium from raw bauxite ore.

This knowledge empowered people to act.

November 2023 Results: A Significant Increase

The November 2023 collection gathered 55 kg of aluminium cans, more than double the February total.

This increase reflected:

  • deeper awareness
  • stronger participation
  • growing environmental responsibility
  • families collecting together
  • employees encouraging one another

Recycling was becoming a habit, not a one-off activity.

Why This Matters: The UAE Context

According to the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), the UAE consumes over 500 million beverage cans every year, and 93% of them end up in landfills. This statistic underscores why initiatives like ours are essential. Every kilogram collected is a kilogram diverted from landfill. Every can recycled reduces carbon emissions. Every awareness session helps shift behaviour.

By November 2023, SHARLU was contributing meaningfully to the UAE’s broader sustainability goals.

Strengthening the Circular Economy Mindset

The November drive deepened understanding of the circular economy, the idea that materials should stay in use for as long as possible.

Employees learned that:

  • aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without losing quality
  • every recycled can saves energy and reduces emissions
  • recycling supports national Net-Zero ambitions
  • small actions at home contribute to large-scale environmental impact

This wasn’t just a collection drive. It was a mindset shift.

A Community Effort That Keeps Growing

What made the November 2023 drive special was the sense of community behind it. People collected cans from homes, cafés, parks, and neighbourhoods. Families got involved. Children learned the difference between “right cans” and “wrong cans.” Conversations about recycling became more common.

Looking Ahead

The November 2023 results sets the stage for even stronger participation in 2024 and 2025. Each cycle built on the last, proving that sustainability grows through awareness, consistency, and collective effort.

The journey continued — and so did the impact.
