When the Hamriyah Free Zone was established in 1995, it represented a bold vision for Sharjah’s economic future, a place where strategic location, infrastructure, and opportunity could come together to attract forward-thinking investors. SHARLU was one of the first companies to see that potential. As the earliest private investor in the Free Zone, SHARLU didn’t just set up operations, it helped lay the foundation for what HFZA would eventually become.
Today, Hamriyah Free Zone is recognised as one of the region’s leading bulk liquid storage ports. SHARLU’s early investment, operational expertise, and long-term commitment played a defining role in that journey, a contribution highlighted in a Gulf News feature published in 2021.

A Strategic Beginning
In the late 1990s, SHARLU secured a long-term lease in HFZA with a clear purpose:
to build a commercial tank farm for the storage of base oils used in industrial, marine, and automotive lubricants.
The Free Zone authorities allocated a plot close to the main jetties – a decision that proved transformative. The proximity to the port allowed SHARLU to efficiently receive bulk liquid cargo from vessels and reload outgoing shipments, creating a seamless flow of product through the terminal.
This strategic placement, combined with HFZA’s supportive business environment, enabled SHARLU to scale quickly and attract other companies to the Free Zone.
Driving HFZA’s Growth Into a Bulk Liquid Storage Hub
As SHARLU expanded its throughput, more companies began to recognise the advantages of operating in HFZA. The Free Zone soon evolved into a major hub for tank farms handling base oils, chemicals, fuels, and other liquid products.
SHARLU’s role was pivotal:
- It was the first commercially operated terminal in the Free Zone.
- It demonstrated the viability and efficiency of HFZA as a bulk liquid storage location.
- It set operational standards that attracted global and regional players.
HFZA’s rise as a leading storage port is closely tied to the early confidence and long-term investment shown by SHARLU.
Operational Excellence That Builds Trust
Over the years, SHARLU has earned a reputation for reliability, precision, and operational integrity. The terminal’s infrastructure and processes are designed to ensure safe, efficient, and transparent handling of every shipment.
Key strengths include:
- Piggable discharging lines with a capacity of up to 180 MT per hour
- Efficient vessel offloading that helps clients avoid demurrage
- Comprehensive tank farm services, including independent surveys, quality checks, and full documentation
- Flexible loading options – tanker trucks, flexi bags, IBCs, or drums
- Meticulous inventory control, tracking every ton from arrival to dispatch
This level of operational discipline has earned SHARLU the trust of multinational companies, many of whom have successfully audited the terminal for product integrity and compliance.
A Partnership Built on Support and Vision
Since signing its lease in 1998, SHARLU has enjoyed a strong, collaborative relationship with the Hamriyah Free Zone Authority. HFZA’s supportive approach, ease of doing business, and commitment to infrastructure development have enabled SHARLU to grow steadily and continuously expand capacity.
This partnership reflects a shared vision:
to strengthen Sharjah’s position as a regional hub for energy, logistics, and industrial growth.
Looking Ahead
The story of SHARLU and HFZA is one of early belief, long-term commitment, and continuous progress. What began as a pioneering investment has grown into a strategic asset – not just for SHARLU, but for the Free Zone and the wider region.
As HFZA continues to evolve, SHARLU remains committed to innovation, operational excellence, and supporting the Free Zone’s ambition to reach new heights.
